Is The Tea Party A Movement or A Bowl of Granola?

Katie Baker By:  Katie Baker, August 24, 2010

There are some individuals in the Tea Party Movement who are becoming frustrated and feel that they need to act independently and on their own in order to get what they feel is of vital importance accomplished RIGHT NOW.

I applaud these individuals for their wanting to take the “bull by the horn” and trying to get something done. I have had very little response from most tea parties, even response from offering them a FREE educational program on our nation’s true Christian heritage at: www.securingthedream.com. (By the way, every quote was authenticated from original documented sources.)

However, that being said, what I think is happening is this: The organizers in charge of the Tea Parties, who are receiving emails and letters and phone calls, must have full time jobs and are inundated with so many requests from across the country that they can't possibly contact them all immediately. What they are going to need to do, so that people do not become discouraged, thinking no one cares about the “little guys,” is to "task" more people to respond to these inquiries immediately. This will mean that more patriot individuals, people just like you, are going to need to volunteer their time and talents for these purposes.

As a business owner I learned early on the importance of delegating responsibility. It is also important, however, that those working as managers learn a chain of command. Running a business can be compared to the military. There has to be a chain of command.

The business must have a business plan. It is the responsibility of the President/CEO to design the plan (or at least approve it) and then to delegate responsibility to managers to get the goals of those plans accomplished.
Those to whom these responsibilities have been given must then delegate responsibilities to the workers. Now, if the manager tries to assume all of these responsibilities (in most cases, trying to make himself look all-important and indispensible to his superior), chances are the task assigned is not going to get accomplished in an most expeditious manner, and probably not as excellent as if it were assigned to a group of workers who collectively could put their minds together and devise a working strategy that would best meet the overall goals of the assignment.

Whenever an employee came to me concerning a task that was assigned by his superior, I would always ask if they had consulted with their supervisor. If not, they were sent back to the supervisor, or the supervisor was called into my office, where we could discuss this privately.

If I had allowed every employee in my company to come into my office and tell me every little detail of everything they wanted to do on a project, I would NEVER have gotten anything accomplished that I needed to manage my business. How do I know this? Simple. I learned the hard way. And then I learned the value of delegating. My life became much more pleasant and bearable and the burden it lifted from my shoulders was amazing … good bye stress! We now had an organized team and even the employees were so much happier!

This is part of the problem or “happy troubles” that I see currently in the Tea Party movement. There are so many people jumping up and down and saying, "Me too! Me too!," but there is no real direction, no real chain of command for incorporating everyone into a well-designed plan of action, so that those wanting to become involved don’t soon begin to feel “left out of the loop.” They soon become discouraged and fall by the wayside if not immediately tasked with some responsibility. We all have different talents and all of our collective talents need to be put to work as soon as possible. It will be the responsibility of the Tea Party organizations, however, to best determine where these talents should be utilized.

Can you imagine what it was like trying to organize the patriots who fought in the American Revolution? Just think of it a moment. Not everyone thought we should be independent from England. So who did you trust with your plans? If caught, you would be considered a traitor and … you could be hung.

It's interesting to see the number of our Founding Fathers who were branded traitors during that time in our nation’s history. I came across a list when we were researching "America Again!" What these men and women sacrificed so that we could be free today is amazing. How many of us are willing to give up what they did for our posterity?

Please don't go around saying that the Tea Parties are doing nothing. They are doing something, but there definitely needs to be more organization. Before making nonproductive remarks that could damage people who are honestly trying to do the best they can, make an appointment to personally sit down with them and have conversations to discover what the overall game plan is and how your talents can best be used to participate in an organized fashion that will accomplish the overall goals of this movement.

REMEMBER: You are a vital part of everything we do!

We must work together, be organized and please don’t react out of frustration!

Whenever we do this, the general public, many of whom we need to bring into the Tea Party Movement, and most importantly, our nation’s leaders, whose hearts and consciences we are trying to reach, will not only think … but believe … that we are nothing but a handful of granola . . a bunch of fruits, nuts and flakes.
